Our communities

Datatec's social and community development goal is to improve education for the next generation and to support local charities in the communities that it operates in. We believe that by combining regional and local efforts under a Group strategy and structure, we can facilitate the creation of meaningful, sustainable impact for Datatec and the world. We have made a commitment to support education in the community through the execution of three business-aligned community education programmes.

The execution of these programmes is underpinned by a strong stakeholder engagement directive, through which we ensure that we are identifying, engaging and collaborating with key stakeholders through all stages of programme development and implementation so that our initiatives are targeting the most relevant groups, that our interventions are meaningful and impactful, and that we are able to communicate our intentions and expectations to ensure that our work is as collaborative and inclusive as possible. This includes our commitment to work and partner with organisations that are in line with our Responsible Business philosophy.

Through the Datatec Foundation as well as our Logicalis, Westcon International and Analysys Mason operations, Datatec has made significant impact in the space of education in FY22, and will continue to drive this agenda in the coming year.

DATATEC GROUP

In FY22, together with the projects executed through the Foundation, a flagship community project was established through international non-profit organisation, Concern Worldwide. The 'Let our Girls Succeed' project in Nairobi and Marsabit Northern Kenya has been running since 2017 with the target of supporting 24 923 girls to continue their education. 'Let our Girls Succeed' or Wasichana Wetu Wafaulu in Kiswahili, is a consortium of partners funded by UK Aid. It is part of the Girls Education Challenge , which was launched in 2012 and strives to help up to 1 million of the world's poorest girls to have an opportunity to improve their lives through education.

The Girls Education Challenge projects and partnerships are implemented through a diverse range of interventions to provide girls with access to education, materials, safe spaces to learn and a 'voice'. Projects are supported to mobilise and build capacity within governments, communities and schools; training and mentoring teachers and community leaders. Projects aim to reach marginalised girls, disabled girls and migrant communities, with more than half of the target group living in high-risk and conflict-affected environments. A key pillar of the initiative is to break gender stereotypes around certain subject such as science and to develop effective teaching methods to make STEM subjects more attractive, especially to girls.

Funding support from Datatec contributes to the goals of the Let our Girls Succeed project by providing bursaries (tuition fees) to support 150 girls to continue (secondary and alternative) education.

Emergency response

When the war in Ukraine began to impact and displace families in early 2022, Datatec promptly made a donation of US$100 000 to Concern Worldwide in support of Concern's Ukraine crisis response.

Support continues to be vital in helping Concern to deliver essential humanitarian supports, including:

  • Cross-border delivery of aid into Ukraine
  • The deployment of trucks across the border into Ukraine loaded with aid such as food, hygiene items, diapers, sleeping bags and sleeping mats
  • Working inside Ukraine to address urgent humanitarian needs
  • The provision of essential supplies and supports for internally displaced families within Ukraine

  SUCCESS STORY

Afrika Tikkun's partnership with Datatec is the true meaning of empowerment

The partnership between transformative development non-profit Afrika Tikkun and the Foundation is so much more than a cash sponsorship.

While the Foundation has contributed more than R3.7 million to Afrika Tikkun in the past decade, the real value lies in how thousands of young people have been empowered.

Afrika Tikkun is dedicated to reducing youth unemployment in South Africa by tackling the socio-economic drivers that make it difficult for the young people to access the economy as productive citizens. It currently benefits between 8 000 – 10 000 participants a year.

The achievements of the beneficiaries since 2009 speak for themselves.

Teboho Shibambo moved on to admin and data capturing, and today consults for numerous entities while also supporting a number of private companies in and around Johannesburg.

Nkosinathi Lusiba arrived as a curious young man and through the programme learnt how to build LAN, communicate with various ISPs and suppliers and set up servers. Today he is self-employed and consults for the City of Cape Town and various schools.

Another success story is found in Mozambican siblings Jessa and Roberto Miambo. They learnt how to run cables, crimp and punch cables, build LANs and gain a greater understanding of hardware and software solutions. Jessa is now in Maputo building workshops to help young entrepreneurs in business, while Roberto is head of IT at Niassa local government municipality.

"Our decade-long partnership with Datatec has had a palpable and lasting impact on the youth at our Centres of Excellence in Diepsloot, Alexandra, Orange Farm, Braamfontein and Mfuleni," says Afrika Tikkun CEO Onyi Nwaneri.

"Datatec has become a much-needed ICT funding partner and has assisted with building and upgrading our technological capabilities and our operational and support infrastructure at our Centres of Excellence. Our partnership has enabled our beneficiaries to become computer literate and access emails and the internet."

Even with the crippling effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Afrika Tikkun's partnership enabled it to reach 16% more young people in 2020 than it did in 2019. "Funding from the Datatec Foundation has been crucial to digitising Afrika Tikkun's various programmes", Nwaneri says.

In line with the organisation's 2020/21 decision to offer programmes through a blended learning approach, a learner management system was purchased through the 'My Learning Hub' platform. Uploading of educational content is ongoing and continues to be adapted to incorporate a more South African curriculum.

Afrika Tikkun was also able to engage an external consultant to digitise content for its core programmes, including Early Childhood Development ("ECD"), Child and Youth Development ("CYD"), and Youth Accelerator Programme ("YAP"). Acquisition of learning devices, such as tablets in particular, is ongoing.

Participants in the ECD, CYD and YAP programmes are offered a selection of basic computer literacy programmes. These range from the fundamentals at grade R and primary school level to the basics of the Microsoft Office Suite package and research of career, bursary and tertiary opportunities at high school level.

Maya Makanjee, Chairperson of the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation, says the investment in Afrika Tikkun has been rewarding at so many levels.

"To see young people not only rise above their circumstances but excel professionally is exactly what we set out to achieve at the Foundation. By continuing along this path we can overcome our high unemployment rate so that our beautiful country can meet its true potential," Makanjee says.
