Our Planet

Datatec is deepening its investment into minimising its environmental impact across its business value chain.

Emissions reduction is a significant pillar of Datatec's environmental stewardship strategy and its efforts are informed by its short and long-term ambitions. There is a continued focus on bolstering emission reduction action plans, whilst ensuring effective tracking and progress measurement.

In order to establish a baseline of its emissions, Datatec had every region report into the CDP in FY23. The Group achieved a B CDP score, which is in the management band, and is a reflection that it is taking coordinated action on climate issues. Datatec is above the African and global averages, which are a B- and C respectively. Datatec's highest scoring areas were risk management and governance, with its lowest scoring areas of targets and scope 3 emissions having since been addressed.

Understanding our broader value chain emissions

To date, Datatec has applied the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard to measure its carbon footprint, focusing on scope 1 and 2 and including certain limited scope 3 emission sources. In FY23, Datatec undertook an initial scope 3 relevance screening to better understand our broader value chain impacts, as per the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard ("Scope 3 Standard"). The primary goal of the Scope 3 Standard is to provide a standardised step-by-step approach to help companies understand their full value chain emissions impact in order to focus company efforts on the greatest greenhouse gas reduction opportunities, leading to more sustainable decisions about companies' activities and the products they buy, sell, and produce.

Because the screening undertaken is a crude estimation of emissions and is not at an acceptable level of accuracy for emissions reporting, they have not been included in this report. The initial scope 3 relevance screening of our operations allowed us to better understand our scope 3 emission sources that need to still be quantified in the future, as well as the key data required in order to quantify these. All 15 scope 3 categories were considered in this screening and the financial-based GHG Protocol Quantis Scope 3 Evaluator Tool and other environmentally extended input-output models from more up to date sources were utilised. The exercise has identified gaps in current scope 3 emissions inclusions, has informed the prioritisation of categories that have been identified as high and very high, and has led to the development of a roadmap for inclusion of scope 3 emissions categories in the future. In the coming year, high priority scope 3 emission categories will be included using acceptable methods of estimation, while other sources will be included using financial expenditure methodologies, with the aim of improving the accuracy of quantification over the next
two to three years.

Datatec's baseline across scopes 1 and 2 are detailed below:

Stepping towards a net zero tomorrow

Following the screening process, the Group has committed to setting science-based targets to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To enable us to meet our goals, we have developed carbon reduction plans specific to the regions in which we operate. We will perform annual reviews to ensure our targets remain aligned with climate science and we are confident that our targets will provide a platform for continued improvements in our environmental sustainability efforts.

Environmental initiatives

Westcon International looks to protect the environment proactively and activities include:

  • Recycling – initiatives are active within all Westcon International's offices with containers to recycle batteries, food in dining rooms/cafeterias and paper recycling. Internal recycling policy posters are displayed. Old computers and other IT equipment are recycled through companies or donated to non-profit organisations for use in other training rooms
  • Conserving energy – lights with sensors
  • Using environmentally friendly technologies – investigations into, and in some areas, completion of the introduction of programmes for electric vehicles for employees and power charging stations at some office locations
  • In an effort to raise environmental awareness, the Westcon Taiwan team organised clean up events and volunteer days which included family members of staff, while the team in China organised a park clean up

Waste and recycling

  • Westcon International continues to make declarations regarding WEEE - packaging and batteries are in line with statutory legislation
  • Strict controls are in place over e-waste using collection points for end-of-life e-waste
    • Collected by licensed waste companies and processed in accordance with legislation
    • E-waste relating to end-of-life products sold/distributed is managed by specially selected waste management compliance schemes
    • Required data of new products sold is collected and submitted to the appropriate authorities, mainly in Europe, and Westcon International is preparing to meet other countries' future waste requirements. In India, Westcon International is required to be part of an e-waste management and education programme to be able to trade in the region and has a third-party provider who manages this programme and ensures that e-waste quotas are completed
    • In the Asia-Pacific region where warehouses manage their own waste, key recyclable elements coming out of the facilities are separated. Where landlords manage the waste, there is proactive engagement with the landlords to change their waste programmes or monitor and report on waste
