Our Communities

Ensuring positive socio-economic impact by unlocking shared prosperity through supporting inclusive education is core to Datatec's purpose.

We are advocates for education and lifelong learning. Over our 37-year history, we have maintained the belief that education is the most transformative force in building a competitive economy and resilient societies. Primarily through the work of our subsidiaries and through the Datatec Educational and Technology Foundation ("the Foundation"), we actively work towards ensuring that education is more inclusive and socially relevant by investing in eliminating barriers to education and actively driving access to quality learning opportunities.

Datatec has committed to work and partner with organisations that align with its Responsible Business philosophy and that offer programmes which support education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics ("STEM") to empower disadvantaged communities, and which facilitate interventions to increase the number of women and minority groups in the technology industry.

Datatec Group

The transition toward the fourth industrial revolution is drastically changing the workforce landscape. STEM-related careers are a significant force behind innovation and economic growth, and there is increased emphasis on a tech-driven and tech-enabled workforce. To ensure that South African youth have access to quality education, regardless of their background or economic status, the Foundation follows a future-led approach to fund educational organisations whose purpose is to empower and equip young people with the skills needed to participate more inclusively in our economy.

Overview of the Foundation

The Foundation funds organisations to improve education within underprivileged communities in South Africa, specifically in STEM subjects. As a competitive global market leader in ICT, Datatec regards it as imperative to address the needs of its founding country's people and make a meaningful difference where it is needed most – education in South Africa.

Success story

No quick silver bullet to mathematics education among township youth, but there is a solution

Ongoing corporate support and a results-driven grassroots programme has and can make a significant difference in addressing the poor uptake of mathematics as a subject, which is crucial if South Africa is to prosper as a nation.

Currently, less than 30% of all matric students take mathematics as a subject, with only half that number passing their final exams. The impact is felt immediately in the corporate sector, particularly in terms of gender parity where women account for only 23% of STEM professionals in the country, according to Statistics South Africa.

Encouraging township youth to take mathematics presents a considerable challenge, since resources are scarce and single-parent households are often unable to meet their most basic needs. Crime, drug and alcohol prevalence present a further challenge.

The problem is not insurmountable, however.

Corporate-backed entities like the Datatec Education and Technology Foundation have recognised the importance of investing in mathematics programmes in townships to produce outstanding graduates who will not only take the country forward, but also uplift their own communities. For over 15 years, the Foundation has partnered with OLICO Maths Education to change the lives of township learners who annually feature among the top 20% of mathematics performers nationally. This relationship is unique in that corporate social investment cycles are usually reviewed on a one-year basis or only operate on a two to three-year funding cycle.

The long-term approach has worked wonders, says OLICO co-founder and director, Andrew Barratt.

"The major advantage is that we've been able to do a deep dive into trying to solve the complex issue that is mathematics education. The ability to test, refine, adapt and repeat cannot be rushed if we want solutions that make a genuine impact," he says. "We are so much wiser, more informed and better equipped for this challenge through the long-term support of partners like Datatec."

It is an approach highly valued by 18-year-old Kwena Molapo High School learner Candy Mamabolo, whose mathematics marks have improved significantly since joining the OLICO programme in 2017.

"I really enjoy that they take time to explain things to you properly and give you the time to understand the mathematics," says Candy, who dreams of becoming a chartered accountant one day. "My mathematics improved so much that I even placed second in a mathematics olympiad."

Another Kwena Molapo High learner, Modishe Motsepe, 14, has become the most improved male learner in the programme.

The aspirant software engineer concurs that taking the time to "explain things nicely", with every pupil being accommodated, makes the programme what it is today.

The partnership between OLICO and the Foundation grew from humble beginnings. Initially, only a small group of Datatec staffers volunteered on an informal computer literacy project in Ivory Park, Midrand. This project later turned into a tutoring programme that evolved to focus on mathematics support across all grades. Ten years ago, OLICO pitched an idea to pilot a mathematics programme in Diepsloot. Only two funders were prepared to invest in the initiative - the Datatec Foundation being one - and today OLICO is a multi-award-winning mathematics support intervention whose programme and materials are used extensively by learners, NGOs and schools across South Africa.

More than 3 200 learners are enrolled annually in the programme, in which lessons are held twice a week in schools and community centres in Gauteng, Limpopo and the Western Cape. In addition, more than 8 000 learners have accessed OLICO's free WhatsApp mathematics hotline to speak to a skilled tutor to help them.

On Mandela Day this year, Datatec helped renovate a lab at OLICO's Diepsloot centre with a new coat of paint and some minor repairs. Datatec also recently funded the installation of a second computer lab at this centre to help cater for more learners.

"The fact is NGOs can't operate on project costs alone," Barratt says. "There are inevitably core organisational expenses that need to be covered. This is an area that has improved dramatically over the past 10 years thanks to Datatec's involvement."

Datatec Foundation Chair Maya Makanjee says education is the key that will unlock prosperity for all South Africans, regardless of their backgrounds and upbringing.

"Success in mathematics and science is critically important if we want to grow the pool of young people pursuing careers in STEM subjects," she says.

Datatec flagship project

In FY23, Datatec partnered with the Bunmi Adedayo Foundation to support their "Subject Enhancement Programme in Mathematics". Through this initiative, 1 000 mathematics teachers from low-cost schools across three Nigerian states (Osun, Ogun and Rivers states) received additional training, hands-on skills, and exposure to best practice tools and principles. This will enable 30 000 primary school students to increase their academic improvement in mathematics, providing them with the skills needed to succeed in the modern economy. Datatec has invested US$67 500 in the project, providing infrastructural support for 15 schools and operational support and training resources. This is part of our commitment to creating more opportunities for young people to secure meaningful and rewarding work.

Datatec's emergency response

Datatec responded to the severe flooding and landslides caused by heavy rainfall in April 2022 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The catastrophic event resulted in over 400 deaths, displaced people, and destroyed houses. In response, Datatec donated ZAR100 000 to Doctors Without Borders and Gift of the Givers to aid relief efforts.

In February 2023, a powerful earthquake hit southeast Turkey and the northwest region of Syria, leaving thousands of people needing necessities like shelter, food, clean water, and sanitation. Datatec responded by donating US$50 000 to Concern Worldwide on their Turkey-Syria Earthquake Emergency Appeal to assist those affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Mandela Day

Datatec head office and WestconGroup SA staff spent a day at OLICO's Diepsloot centre on Mandela Day – an annual celebration in South Africa to mark Nelson Mandela's birthday to commemorate his legacy – painting the computer labs. Datatec also funded the installation of water tanks, fixing toilets and a new short throw projector for one of the labs as part of the Mandela Day initiative.

Datatec also recently funded the installation of a second computer lab at this centre to help cater for more learners, funded a solar system installation and purchased tablets for another OLICO centre.
